In Stella, Louisiana, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle testing services. For drug or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair analysis, available in centers across all major cities in the nation. Generally, hair samples of 1.5 to 2 inches are required for this test, which screens for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can also accommodate personalized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained prominence over urine tests for drug screening. Organizations such as employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse experts are opting for this method. Employers with strict drug policies, legal institutions, and individuals on probation rely on the hair test, which detects drug use up to 90 days. Despite its advantages, within a short window of 5 days, urine tests remain precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair can retain a prolonged history of substance exposure by encapsulating markers within the fibers of emerging hair. Sampling near the scalp, hair can reveal up to around a 3-month detection span for alcohol and drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to taint, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (about as thick as a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest verifying the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp cannot be acquired, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. By head hair, we mean scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's preliminary integration into the laboratory system, ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a swift initial inspection for substances of abuse. Screening offers an economical means to negate drug consumption in most samples; however, a positive result must be verified for it to stand in legal settings. Samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a far lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeline.
  • Resistance to tampering: Tampering with a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage data: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting immediate usage: A delay of about 5-7 days is required for drugs to be identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur greater costs than other testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the actual examination pertains to the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in Stella, LA by providing superior detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, hair testing can track substance use for a much longer period, making it especially valuable for those needing comprehensive analysis. Employers benefit from a broader detection window compared to the limited timeframe provided by urine tests. As a result, employers gain a more inclusive view of an individual's substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

In Stella, LA, the extended detection window of hair follicle tests provides significant advantages. This testing method can trace drug use back up to 90 days, a stark contrast to shorter detection periods of urine tests. This prolonged timeframe allows for a comprehensive assessment of an individual's substance history.

Employers in Stella, LA can gain invaluable insights into potential hires and current employees. The extensive history detected by hair follicle testing contributes to more informed hiring and monitoring decisions. This added layer of scrutiny ensures workplace safety and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
