Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Stonewall, Louisiana. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our experts specialize in hair testing. With centers in every city across the nation, we can perform accurate hair tests. Typically, an inch and a half to two inches of hair from the crown or body is required for analysis, which can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG or other specific options.

In recent times, the hair follicle drug test has become a favored method for drug testing over traditional urine tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer it. Companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers use hair tests due to their extensive detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection method, and minimal risk of cheating. However, for detecting recent drug usage within five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an essential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair effectively chronicles a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. Collecting samples near the scalp can offer up to around a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches from roughly 200 strands of hair (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp equates to 100mg, which is the preferred amount for screening and confirmation. For tests including EtG, add-ons, and/or panels beyond 10, a sample weighing 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is suggested. In cases where scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four core phases in the laboratory handling of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's workflow. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial swift assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to be legally admissible. Presumptive positive samples from the Screening phase must undergo a secondary confirmation.

For samples presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is completed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that test positive are washed prior to confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter window.
  • Tamper-resistant: It is extremely hard to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a longitudinal view of drug use, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other drug test methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Stonewall, LA, the benefits of hair follicle testing overshadow traditional urine tests. Hair tests provide a longer detection window, allowing for a thorough understanding of an individual's drug history. This long-term view is crucial for employers aiming to maintain a safe, drug-free workplace, as it reveals substance use over the past 90 days.

Beyond the detection window, the hair test's reliability in resisting tampering makes it a preferred option. While urine tests can only capture recent drug use, hair tests offer extensive insight into an individual's habits, presenting a more comprehensive picture of personal accountability and adherence to company policies.

Extended Detection Window

In Stonewall, LA, the extended detection window offered by hair follicle testing is a breakthrough in understanding substance use patterns. Unlike other methods, hair tests can uncover drug use over a period of up to 90 days, providing a panoramic view of an individual's history. This is particularly useful for employers looking to get a complete picture of an applicant or current employee's drug habits.

Utilizing the length of the hair growth cycle, these tests detect even infrequent substance use, which is often missed by shorter-term testing methods like urine analysis. This long-term insight is invaluable for upholding safety and compliance standards in various settings, from workplaces to legal proceedings.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Stonewall, LA, the hair follicle testing method significantly reduces risks associated with sample tampering. This robust testing approach ensures reliable and unquestionable results, making it a crucial tool for any organization or individual requiring accurate drug testing. The process of collecting hair samples is less prone to manipulation compared to other methods, thereby enhancing the credibility of the test results.

By removing the possibility of sample adulteration, hair follicle tests provide peace of mind and assurance to employers, legal entities, and others relying on the integrity of the results. This tamper-resistant feature further positions this testing technique as a leading option for anyone needing thorough, honest assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
