At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Tickfaw, Louisiana. Whether you require a drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing spans across various locations nationwide, making it accessible to one and all. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is sufficient for these tests, allowing assessment for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

The trend in drug testing methodologies increasingly favors hair follicle tests. More organizations, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now opt for hair tests over traditional urine exams. A hair follicle drug test offers employers with no-tolerance policies extensive monitoring capabilities. Its extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process, makes it almost cheat-proof. Yet, for detecting usage in the past five days, a urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures and retains markers of alcohol and drug use within its strands as it grows, offering a timeline of up to three months, especially when collected directly from the scalp. Hair collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for screening and verification. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not present, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Procedure Outline

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of entering a sample into a laboratory’s system. It verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes supplementary data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed to stand in court. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is obtained from the initial sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing a challenging process.

Verification of any positive screen result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Depicts historical consumption: It outlines drug use trends over time rather than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Can't reveal recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug residues in the hair.

Note: Often labeled as "hair follicle tests", this test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
