Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Turkey Creek, Louisiana. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched. With testing centers located in every city across the Nation, we are equipped to perform hair tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body parts is typically required, ready to be scrutinized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing is increasingly being prioritized. Several employers, judiciary systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer it over standard urine analysis. Employers with zero drug tolerance, courts, and those on probation benefit from these tests. The primary advantage lies in its longer detection span, typically reaching up to 90 days, conducted under observation and tough to bypass. Yet, urine tests remain the most precise for recent usage detection within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair can reveal a comprehensive timeline of substance use by ensnaring biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage for a time span of up to 90 days. The collection process of hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is recommended to weigh the hair on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be harvested. References to head hair imply only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory system. This step includes ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing supplementary data entry that is not covered by electronic systems for maintaining the chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although it is a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive result in Screening requires Confirmatory testing to stand in court. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmatory testing.

In cases where Screening yields a presumptive positive result, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods such as urine or oral fluid testing, highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive findings undergo a washing process as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, ranging from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is exceedingly challenging to alter the results of a hair drug test, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical consumption data: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over an extended duration, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually analyzes the hair strand as opposed to the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
