Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Ventress, Louisiana. If you're in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with centers available nationwide, capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair at the crown of your head, but body hair can also be used in most cases. Hair tests are versatile, analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Employers, court systems, and substance abuse specialists often choose a hair drug test over a standard urine test. Organizations with zero-tolerance policies for drug use, courts, and probation programs frequently utilize these tests. Hair follicle drug testing provides the advantage of a longer detection timeline, typically up to 90 days, conducted through observed collection, making it nearly unfeasible to falsify. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair stores a long-term record of alcohol and other drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and different drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the width of a #2 pencil) cut close to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is considered an ideal sample size for screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. In the event scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab's system. This step involves verifying that the sample was adequately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial cursory assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive Screening must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples that are tentatively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample be tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is gathered from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, the drug content is extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than with alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples tentatively positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The end-to-end laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is vetted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Allows detecting drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to evade: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: Provides a record of drug usage patterns over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot spot recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself targets the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
