Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Village Saint George, Louisiana. Whether hair drug or alcohol tests are needed, our specialty lies in hair testing, available at centers across all U.S. cities. Typically, hair on the head or body ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches is suitable for testing. These assessments are customizable for drug, alcohol/ETG, or other configurations.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent times as a preferred method over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, judicial courts, and Substance Abuse professionals choose hair tests for probation monitoring. The key advantage is their ability to detect drug use for up to 90 days, coupled with an observed collection process that minimizes cheating possibilities. Urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs up to around three months. Hair samples are easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (equivalent to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG additions, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially integrated into the laboratory's system. This process includes confirming the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Screening offers a cost-effective means to eliminate drug presence in most cases, but any positive screen must be verified to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptively positive require further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This step involves drawing drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is among the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection time.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is very difficult to falsify a hair drug test, leading to more accurate results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It can reveal drug usage patterns over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Drugs become identifiable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other methods of drug testing.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is of the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Village Saint George, LA, lies in the superior detection accuracy and reliability of hair tests. Unlike traditional urine testing methods, hair follicle tests provide a more comprehensive picture of long-term substance use.

Employers prefer hair testing because of its longer detection window and difficulty to tamper with. Compared to urine tests, hair follicle analyses are less vulnerable to fraudulent practices, ensuring a more dependable outcome.

Extended Detection Window

The Extended Detection Window of hair follicle testing in Village Saint George, LA, offers a thorough overview of an individual's substance use. This method's capacity to track drug ingestion for up to 90 days allows employers to understand ongoing patterns.

Hair testing's prolonged detection window empowers businesses to make informed decisions by considering an applicant or employee's substance history, which is crucial for maintaining a drug-free workplace environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
