Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Violet, Louisiana. If a hair or alcohol test is required, we focus on hair testing, with centers in all major cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made options.

Lately, hair follicle testing has risen to prominence in drug testing techniques. Compared to urine tests, more employers, courts, and therapists demand it. It's commonly used for its long detection window of up to 90 days, near impossibility to cheat, and observation during collection. However, urine tests remain reliable for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands. When collected from near the scalp, hair can indicate usage over a period of up to three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the circumference of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp ensures 100mg, which is an optimal quantity for screenings and confirmations. For EtG, additional panels, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen quantity of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable volume of body hair may serve as a substitute. When discussing head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of hair drug tests comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample is initially processed into the lab’s system, which includes checking for secure sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid examination for abused substances. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most cases, any positive results from this stage need validation to be acceptable in legal settings. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If Screening suggests a sample is positive, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug analysis being one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening uses techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing before Confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter duration.
  • Hard to falsify: It's challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It offers an overview of drug usage patterns over time, rather than merely recent use detection.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-usage.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Variances such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Violet, LA, hair follicle testing stands out against urine testing as the superior method for drug detection. Offering heightened precision and reliability, hair tests uncover substance use over an extended time. While urine tests might miss earlier drug use, hair analysis ensures accuracy, providing a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history.

Compared to urine tests, hair follicle testing significantly enhances drug detection accuracy. Known for its reliability, hair testing identifies a greater range of substances over an extended period. This method helps employers and legal systems in Violet, LA maintain stringent drug-free policies, underscoring its vital role in screening programs.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Violet, LA offers a massive advantage—an extensive detection period stretching up to 90 days. This gives employers a broadened perspective on an individual’s drug use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
