Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Wallace Ridge, Louisiana. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, our company excels in hair tests, with facilities existing nationwide capable of administering such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair is adequate for most hair tests, which can evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored screening options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly shifted towards using hair follicle tests. A significant number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug testing over traditional urine tests. Organizations with stringent anti-drug use policies, courts, and individuals on probation harness this method. Hair follicle testing's main advantage is its extended detection window, typically up to 90 days. The sample collection is supervised, minimizing cheating. However, for identifying drug consumption within the past five days, urine analysis remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying the usage of alcohol and drugs. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance intake, embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use for up to three months. This method of testing is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient for mailing.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is preferred. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, and so on).

Process Overview

The key steps in processing a test sample in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial setup of a sample within a lab system. It comprises ensuring the sample was securely sealed and sent, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid analysis for potential drug misuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, confirmation is required for legally binding results in any positive screen. Samples indicating potential positivity in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If Screening indicates a positive result, additional hair from the initial sample is prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair but at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of conducting hair drug screening.

Confirmation of a positive screen is finalized using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Samples that test presumptively positive are cleansed as part of the preparation for confirmation, if necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated against both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Perks of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to adulteration, ensuring reliable accuracy.
  • Chronological usage insight: It provides a record of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug testing incurs greater costs compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Despite often called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
