In Weston, Louisiana, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in hair testing and have facilities in cities nationwide equipped for these tests. To perform a test, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is necessary in most cases. They can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has been increasing among drug testing methodologies. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These are preferred by entities with strict no-drug-use policies, probationers, and legal circles. A key advantage is its extended detection window, up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process, making it hard to tamper with. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests are still preferred.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended overview of substance usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can present up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches from roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for both initial screening and further confirmation. To conduct EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's recommended to measure the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a similar quantity of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, the scalp hair is specifically referred to. Body hair denotes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory's analysis of a drug testing result involves four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary processing of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step entails ensuring the sample's secure sealing and appropriate shipment, the assignment of a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling out any missing data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-effective means to exclude drug use for the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates further verification for court acceptability. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than with alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is employed for verifying any positive screening outcomes. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus offering more precise outcomes.
  • Yields historical insights: It can depict a timeline of drug consumption over an interval, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis itself is performed on the hair strand, not the hair follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
