Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Blue Hill, Maine. For those in need of drug or alcohol hair tests, we specialize in hair testing with centers nationwide for your convenience. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp or body. Our hair testing options can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer customized solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a common method for drug testing. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by organizations with strict no-drug-use policies, legal systems, and probation officers. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, with an observed collection that is extremely difficult to tamper with. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by retaining biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When hair is sourced close to the scalp, it can offer a detection time frame for up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A specimen of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both testing and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assays exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg portion is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accurately measuring the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar measure of body hair can be accepted. 'Head hair' pertains only to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal steps in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a lab's sample. This phase ensures that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any additional data input not provided by an electronic management system.

Screening offers an early rapid assessment for substance misuse. Though Screening is an economical method to clear most samples of drug activity, a positive result must be validated to be permissible in judicial settings. Samples that show positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If results show a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is retrieved from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from the hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug testing is regarded as the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any Screening positive results is performed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing a presumptive positive undergo washing as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine testing which offers a narrower detection window.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are hard to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides usage trends: It can illustrate a timeline of drug usage over a period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to determine recent use: Drugs emerge in hair detectably after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally costs more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the tests analyze the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
