Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug analysis in Brooklin, Maine. If a hair or alcohol test is required, cooperation with our professionals in hair follicle examination is assured. Our testing sites span across every city nationwide, equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required and can be tested for substances including drugs, alcohol/ETG, or specialized tests.

There has been a noticeable increase in the use of hair follicle drug tests in recent times. Various employers, legal systems, and substance abuse counselors now prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are employed by employers who enforce zero-tolerance drug policies, legal authorities, and probationary individuals. The primary advantage of a hair test is its extended detection period, which spans up to 90 days, in a supervised collection, making it extremely difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, to detect recent usage within 5 days, urine tests still hold supremacy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. The strands offer an extended record of alcohol and drug usage by encapsulating markers within the structure of the hair as it grows. If collected from near the scalp, the hair can reflect a detection period of up to roughly three months for substances and alcohol. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil in size) taken from nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both preliminary and confirmatory examinations. For EtG testing, additional options, or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. By "head hair," we mean specifically scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other forms (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in lab processing of a drug test outcome consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This stage confirms that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening is a preliminary and swift assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, for positive findings to hold up legally, confirmation is necessary. Any samples that are provisionally positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation step.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at considerably lower concentrations than seen in other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair specialization and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection span: Hair drug assessments can identify drug consumption for a duration as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests that offer a narrower detection period.
  • High resistance to alteration: Manipulating the outcome of a hair drug test is significantly challenging, thereby increasing the results' reliability.
  • Offers longitudinal insights: It can reveal a sequence of drug usage over time spans, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the examination actually assesses the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
