Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Brownfield, Maine. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis with centers across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body, hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailor-made testing preferences.

Recently, the reliance on a hair follicle test for drug detection has increased compared to traditional methods. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over standard urine analyses. These tests are ideal for zero-tolerance workplaces, judicial requirements, and probation situations, owing to their extended detection window up to 90 days, a monitored collection process, and difficulty to tamper with. Despite these benefits, urine tests remain superior for identifying recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term history of substances by locking in biomarkers within the strands. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG and tests over 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is recommended. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in a laboratory drug test evaluation are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of entering a sample into a lab's system. This step includes verifying proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing other data entry tasks not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial test for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is economically efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positives in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

When a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging to execute.

Any positive Screening outcome is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation as necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes a review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Shows historical usage: It depicts a pattern of drug usage over time, not only recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Not suitable for recent detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Result variance: Hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually measures the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Brownfield, ME, is superior to urine testing due to its enhanced detection capabilities. With its advanced accuracy, hair testing serves as a more reliable method for identifying substance use over longer periods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
