Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Burlington, Maine. For those needing drug or alcohol tests involving hair, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader with facilities nationwide prepared to conduct hair tests. Typically, a sample from the crown of the head of about 1.5 to 2 inches is needed. The analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

The trend of using hair follicle drug tests has been on the rise over the years. These tests are being increasingly mandated by employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts as an alternative to urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance policies, these tests are preferred by employers, courts, and rehabilitation entities due to their extensive drug detection window of up to 90 days, ensuring authenticity in the collection process, and being nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for the detection of recent usage within five days, urine tests remain the benchmark.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair, it chronicles a long-term record. When taken from near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use over approximately a 3-month timespan. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

Acquiring a 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 hairs (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is perfect for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to obtain 150mg. Using a jeweler’s scale for measurement is suggested. If scalp hair is not accessible, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The major stages in lab processing for a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into the lab system. This step checks if the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any extra data entry that an electronic chain of custody system might not provide.

Screening is a quick preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, any positive screen result needs confirmation for it to be valid in court. Samples with presumptive positive results during Screening require secondary confirmation.

When a sample appears positive in the Screening phase, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. Here, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the hardest method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can find drug use up to 90 days earlier, as opposed to urine tests, which have a limited detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in greater accuracy.
  • Reveals historical use: It provides a timeline of drug usage over time, beyond just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot spot recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
