Specifically, "head hair" refers solely to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" pertains to all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory's drug testing process entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase, integrating a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step confirms proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for illicit drugs. This cost-efficient step helps eliminate drug usage for most samples, but a positive screen requires confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples with a presumptively positive result in Screening mandate further confirmation.

Any positive screen outcome proceeds to Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, presumptive positive samples are washed as needed. This entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
