Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug examinations in Cutler, Maine. Specializing in hair drug or alcohol evaluations, we offer hair testing through centers across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be adapted for other specified tests.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more favored method for drug assessment. Many employers, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair drug evaluations over standard urinalysis. Hair follicle tests cater to organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, court mandates, and probation requirements. The main advantage is the extended detection period, usually up to 90 days, collected through an observed procedure, making it hard to manipulate. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the preferred choice for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drug presence by ensnaring biomarkers within the hair's growing strand fibers. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil), taken nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. By head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This process entails confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug use in most cases, any positive screen requires confirmation for judicial validity. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which underscores the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo thorough washing before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review in accordance with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing can uncover drug use extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Complexity to evade: Evading a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result precision.
  • Chronological data: Hair tests reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
