Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Dayton, Maine. For those in need of drug or alcohol hair analysis, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in these services, offering centers nationwide to conduct hair examinations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the scalp or body. Hair assessments can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer specialized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug examinations have increasingly become a standard for substance assessment. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts typically opt for hair analysis over traditional urine tests. With zero-tolerance policies, employers, judicial systems, and probation officers prefer hair analyses due to their extended detection period, spanning up to 90 days. Such tests are collected under observation, making them nearly impossible to falsify. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain the precise option.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an influential method, hair analysis is instrumental in identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical archive of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers during growth. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to nearly a 3-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch segment comprised of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the breadth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for assessment and verification. For EtG tests, additional analyses, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advocate utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In situations where scalp hair is unobtainable, a comparable amount of body hair can be utilized. When addressing head hair, it pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test outcomes encompasses four fundamental steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the preliminary processing of a sample into the laboratory system. It entails confirming the sample's sealing and correct shipping, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial swift assessment for drug misuse. While Screening presents a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug usage for a majority of samples, any positive outcome necessitates confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples presumptively positive in Screening require further verification.

Upon obtaining a presumptive positive result at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and primed for Extraction. In this step, substances are isolated from hair at a significantly reduced concentration than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive status undergo cleansing prior to verification as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug consumption for a span of up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is considerably arduous to manipulate a hair drug test, thus rendering the results more precise.
  • Yields historical data: It can present a chronology of drug consumption over time, not solely recent indulgence.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to identify recent use: It necessitates around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest detectability in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Results variability: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Frequently dubbed as "hair follicle tests," this analysis evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
