In Eliot, Maine, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether you need a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with centers across the country ready to assist. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body suffices. Hair evaluations can uncover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific needs.

These days, drug testing often incorporates hair follicle assessments. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance specialists prefer hair analyses over the commonplace urine tests. Hair follicle tests appeal to employers adopting zero-tolerance policies and authorities managing probation. The main advantage is a longer detection span, typically up to 90 days, with supervised sample collection, making it nearly foolproof. But for recent drug activities within 5 days, urine testing remains unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing is regarded as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When gathered close to the scalp, it offers up to a three-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 strands of hair (about the width of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair may be taken. References to head hair pertain only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample into a lab's system. It involves verifying the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry that an electronic chain of custody system does not cover.

Screening is a preliminary quick test for drugs of abuse. It is a cost-efficient method for excluding drug use in the majority of samples, however, a positive screen must be validated for court admissibility. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

For samples that are conceivably positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and made ready for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening result is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to manipulation: Cheating on a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historical usage data: It can offer a record of drug use over an extended timeframe, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Insufficient for detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
