Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance testing in Grand Isle, Maine. Specializing in hair analysis, we have facilities in all major cities across the country. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our centers are equipped to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific analyses.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a method for detecting drug use. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often opt for this over traditional urine tests. It's favored by those with strict drug use policies, including employers and probationary courts. Hair follicle tests provide a longer detection window, capturing up to 90 days of drug use, using a monitored collection procedure, making them almost foolproof. For recent usage detection within five days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Within the strands, hair captures a timeline of alcohol and drug intake by incorporating biomarkers in its structure. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period for alcohol and drugs extending up to roughly three months. The collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (equivalent in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg, which is optimal for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, more comprehensive panels exceeding 10, or other add-ons, a sample mass of 150mg is suggested. It's advised to use a jeweler’s scale for weight measurement. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. Reference to head hair denotes specifically the scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of integrating a sample into a lab's system. It includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any remaining data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as the initial drug use assessment. While it offers a cost-efficient means to eliminate the possibility of drugs in the bulk of samples, positive results require confirmation to be legally valid. Samples showing likely positives in Screening must undergo further verification.

Upon presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction stage. At this point, drugs are isolated from hair but at lower concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening notably challenging.

Confirmation of positive screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and maintains ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Sustained detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter time frame.
  • Cheating deterrence: Hair drug tests are very challenging to deceive, leading to more reliable results.
  • Historical usage data: They provide evidence of drug consumption patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5 to 7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other forms of drug testing.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test focuses on analyzing the strand of hair, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
