Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hartford, Maine. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in hair testing and offer facilities across the country that can administer a hair test. Hair on the crown or body, approximately 1.5 to 2 inches long, is generally required. These tests are capable of identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a common choice for drug screening. A hair drug test is often preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists over a typical urine test. Hair follicle drug tests benefit organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and those on probation by offering a longer detection window, up to 90 days, through an observed collection process, making it almost tamper-proof. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline for alcohol and drug use detection by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month retrospective window for detecting alcohol and drug usage. Hair collection is uncomplicated, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the perfect amount for initial screenings and confirmations. For EtG tests, extra tests, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair comprises all other hair types like facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample initially enters a lab's system. This step confirms the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment to identify drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive screen needs confirmation to be acceptable legally. Samples positive in Screening must be further confirmed.

If a sample is tentatively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair in much lower concentrations than via other methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumption of a positive sample is washed before confirmation when necessary. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days back, compared to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is challenging, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers past usage data: It can display a timeline of drug use over several months, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair in around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand itself, not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing has emerged as a preferable option over urine tests in Hartford, ME for its distinct advantages. These tests offer superior detection capabilities, identifying drug use over a significant period of time. Their reliability in delivering accurate findings makes them a trusted choice, as opposed to the limited detection span of urine tests.

Compared to urine testing, hair follicle tests deliver a higher degree of accuracy and dependability. Not only do they uncover a broader history of drug use, but they are also less susceptible to tampering, ensuring the integrity of each test.

Extended Detection Window

One key advantage of hair follicle testing in Hartford, ME is its extended detection window. This method can reveal drug consumption within a time frame of up to 90 days, offering employers a detailed view of an individual's substance use history. Such comprehensive information is essential for making informed hiring and management decisions.

Employers gain a more comprehensive understanding of a potential or current employee's behavior through hair follicle testing. This amplified detection range covers nearly three months of substance history, setting it apart from other testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
