In Knox, Maine, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in both hair drug and alcohol tests, we operate testing centers in every city across the country equipped to conduct hair testing. Generally, a sample requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body. Hair analysis can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offers custom-tailored testing solutions.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly popular as a method of drug detection. An increasing number of employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests over traditional urine analysis. They are favored by organizations with strict no-tolerance policies, judicial bodies, and probation programs. This method's advantage is its extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, observed collection, and resistance to tampering. However, urine tests remain most effective for immediate detection within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When we discuss head hair, we specify scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key phases in the lab handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step verifies the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary evaluation for drug abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples presumed positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumed positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations considerably lower compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening is the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screen results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation as appropriate. The comprehensive laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Shows usage patterns: Offers a timeline of drug use over an extended period, rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the beneath-the-scalp follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When it comes to identifying drug use, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine testing, especially in locations like Knox, ME. The precision and extended detection period of hair tests provide an advantage, capturing evidence of drug use up to 90 days. This makes it a reliable choice for employers, offering insights that urine tests simply can't match.

Moreover, hair testing in Knox ensures credibility and authenticity due to its intricate process, reducing the likelihood of tampering. Employers stand to benefit significantly as hair tests disclose a comprehensive timeline of an individual's drug use, unlike the short window provided by urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Employers benefit from hair follicle testing in Knox, ME, due to its extended detection window, which captures drug use over a span of up to 90 days. This lengthy window allows for a full review of an individual’s substance history, aiding in better employment decisions and policy enforcement.

By providing this comprehensive overview, hair tests help employers identify patterns of use that urine tests, restricted to a shorter detection window, may miss. This ensures a more thorough evaluation of an applicant's or employee’s lifestyle choices, contributing to a safer workplace environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
