Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Limerick, Maine. Our expertise in hair testing extends across all cities nationwide, offering hair or alcohol tests with centers ready to conduct these screenings. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body can be employed for most tests. Our hair analyses cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored testing options.

Of late, drug screening methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. This method is favored by entities enforcing strict drug-free policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The standout advantage is hair tests’ prolonged detection period, typically up to 90 days, conducted under direct supervision, rendering them nearly immune to tampering. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has increasingly been recognized as an effective instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, it can offer a detection span of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting the sample is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hairs (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10-panel tests, a specimen weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four chief steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering additional data as required that isn’t supplied by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should the sample test presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than via other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any positive result from Screening is accomplished through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Samples that are presumptive positive are washed before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely difficult to deceive a hair drug test, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can present a usage pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Results variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Though often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Limerick, ME, proves superior to urine tests by offering enhanced detection accuracy. Unlike urine tests, hair samples provide a wider detection window, identifying drug use over a longer period. This ensures thorough substance use analysis, surpassing the limited scope of urine testing and providing a robust tool for employers.

When juxtaposed with urine testing, hair follicle methods in Limerick, ME, offer heightened reliability. The long detection window and less invasive collection process make hair testing a preferred choice. Moreover, it's less susceptible to deceit, ensuring integrity and confidence in drug-testing outcomes.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Limerick, ME, prefer hair follicle testing due to its extensive detection window, which spans up to 90 days. This method uncovers an applicant's or employee's drug use history, providing a comprehensive overview beyond what short-term tests like urine can detect. This enhanced temporal reach fosters informed decision-making.

With its extended detection period, hair follicle testing in Limerick, ME, surpasses traditional methods, offering insights into long-term substance use. This broader scope is critical for employers looking to gauge an accurate picture of an individual’s potential impact on workplace safety and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
