Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing in Limington, Maine. Whether you're in need of a hair-related drug or alcohol test, our centers, located in every city Nationwide, are well-equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Hair analysis targets drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customizable testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained traction as a leading method for drug testing, surpassing traditional urine tests. Many organizations such as employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists, now lean towards hair testing. This switch is due to the extended detection range of up to 90 days, coupled with the observed collection process and enhanced accuracy, making it tamper-resistant. For recent drug activity, within 5 days, urine tests remain the benchmark.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become acknowledged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair stores a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month window of detection for alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands close to the scalp (roughly the size of a #2 pencil), will amount to 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample undergoes initial processing into the lab’s system. This step entails verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry not covered by the electronic chain of custody system.

In Screening, an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse is conducted. Screening is a cost-efficient means to dismiss drug use in most samples; however, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive result at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive Screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete lab process is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast with urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Supplies historical information: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolites' concentration in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Choose Hair Follicle over Urine Testing in Limington, ME? Hair follicle tests triumph with higher detection accuracy compared to urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
