Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Lincoln, Maine. Catering to those needing hair drug or alcohol analysis, we excel in hair specimen tests, with facilities across the nation available to conduct these assessments. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Analyses can cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing alternatives.

In recent years, the approach to drug assessments has increasingly involved hair follicle evaluations. Numerous employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse specialists favor hair analysis over conventional urine screenings. Hair tests appeal to employers enforcing strict drug-free policies, legal systems, and for those on probation, due to their prolonged detection scope of approximately 90 days, their monitored collection method, and the minimal opportunity for tampering. However, to detect drug usage within a five-day period, urine tests remain the preferred option.

What it is, How it works

Recently, hair analysis has emerged as an effective mechanism for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. This method offers an extended overview of substance intake by capturing markers within the strands of growing hair. When collected just near the scalp, it grants almost a three-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient for shipping.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp should yield 100mg of hair, deemed the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or screenings exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amounting to 150mg is advisable. Utilization of a jeweler’s scale is recommended to weigh the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used instead. When mentioning head hair, it specifically points to scalp hair alone, while body hair signifies any other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the primary handling of a sample within a laboratory's framework. The process ensures that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) is assigned, and any supplemental data entry, not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system, is completed.

Screening entails an initial cursory inspection for substances of abuse. This stage is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug consumption in most samples; however, a positive result at this level requires confirmation to be considered valid in courtroom settings. Any samples registering as presumptively positive during Screening need secondary validation.

Should a sample be preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted from the hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), reason why hair drug testing is considered the most complex technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Each presumptive positive sample is washed as necessary before confirmation. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under the guidelines of both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug analysis can detect substance use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with a shorter detection range.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating in hair drug testing is extremely difficult, making the findings more trustworthy.
  • Provides historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of substance consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It typically takes about 5-7 days for substances to be detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug analysis is generally pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
