Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lincolnville, Maine. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing and maintains testing facilities in every city across the Nation equipped for hair testing. Generally, hair samples from the head or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, are adequate for testing. This method allows for the analysis of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, the trend towards using hair follicle drug testing has grown. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts favor it over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are particularly chosen by employers who enforce strict anti-drug policies, judiciary systems, and probation supervisions. A key benefit is the extended detection window, often reaching up to 90 days, achieved through direct supervision during sample collection, making it nearly foolproof. However, for detecting very recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective tool for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extensive timeline of drug and alcohol use by capturing biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels beyond 10, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When we discuss head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. It involves ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial swift assessment for drug usage. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug consumption for the majority of samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed to be legally valid. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample tests positive initially in the Screening phase, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g. urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is one of the most challenging methods to perform.

To confirm any positive screening result, techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS are utilized. All presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Establishes usage history: It provides a record of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence the concentration of drug substances in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lincolnville, ME, hair follicle testing eclipses urine testing with its advanced detection capabilities and increased reliability. Unlike traditional urine tests, hair tests reveal a comprehensive history of substance use, offering employers key insights.

Better Accuracy: Hair testing delivers superior accuracy over urine tests in detecting drug use over longer periods, making it invaluable for thorough evaluations.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection: Hair follicle testing in Lincolnville, ME, uncovers drug use up to 90 days prior, surpassing the shorter detection window of urine tests. This extended period gives a full view of an individual's substance history.

This method provides employers with the necessary foresight into potential employees' substance use, offering a clear and extended overview of their drug-use past.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
