Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Long Island, Maine. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in this field, boasting testing facilities in all cities nationwide equipped to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required for testing. These analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for other specific requirements.

In recent times, the hair follicle test method is increasingly favored for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now often opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probation officers, utilize hair follicle drug tests. This method's advantage is its extended detection of drug usage, up to 90 days, observed during collection, making it nearly cheat-proof. Yet, for detecting recent drug use, within five days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Serving as a record over an extended period, hair can capture biomarkers within the fibers of a growing strand. Positioned near the scalp, hair offers a detection window for alcohol and drugs of up to roughly three months. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is relatively challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch sample, consisting of about 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the hair sample is advisable. In the absence of scalp hair, an equal volume of body hair may be utilized. "Head hair" strictly pertains to scalp hair, while "body hair" covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab process for determining a drug test result comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, a sample is first processed into the lab’s system. This step involves checking that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry that is not recorded by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening stage is a preliminary assessment for substances of abuse. While cost-effective for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a Screening positive result needs confirmation to be valid in legal settings. All presumptive positives require follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample to undergo the Extraction phase. Here, substances are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (like urine or oral fluids), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug screenings.

Positive screenings are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation, if necessary. The end-to-end lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug testing identifies drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to outmaneuver, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks historical usage: Offers a historical pattern of substance usage over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify recent use: A delay of approximately 5-7 days exists before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to alternative drug screening methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth may impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite often being described as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When compared to urine tests, hair follicle testing in Long Island, ME, boasts superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing can reveal a history of drug use over a longer period, providing a thorough assessment. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
