Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Machiasport, Maine. If you require a hair or alcohol drug test, our expertise in hair testing is supported by testing centers across all cities nationwide that can conduct these tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body typically suffices. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for various testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years as a preferred method for conducting drug tests. More employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair tests over conventional urine tests. They are commonly used when there is a strict no-drug policy, by courts, and for individuals on probation. One major advantage is the extended detection span, generally up to 90 days, with samples collected under supervision, making them difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests are still the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for detecting substances. Hair captures historical usage data of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibre. When sourced from near the scalp, hair offers a detection period for alcohol and drugs of roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and simple to send off.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 hair strands (approximately the dimensions of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimum sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is advised. It's preferable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. Our term “head hair” applies solely to scalp hair, while “body hair” encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing protocol encompasses four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step in integrating a sample into a laboratory’s database. This step verifies the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing information not available from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial analysis for substance presence. Though Screening efficiently excludes drugs in most specimens, a positive finding must undergo Confirmation to be legally valid. Presumed positive samples in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

Should a screening yield a presumptive positive, further hair is taken from the sample and prepped for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at concentrations much lesser than in alternative methods such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing a notably challenging technique.

Verification of positive findings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. All samples indicating presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation as appropriate. The complete procedure from Accessioning to Verification undergoes evaluation in line with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can ascertain drug use up to 90 days back, far exceeded by urine tests with shorter spans.
  • Resistance to tampering: The difficulty in altering a hair test result enhances its reliability.
  • Records historical use: Reveals a pattern of drug use over extended periods, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: A 5-7 day delay exists before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Conducting hair tests is generally costlier compared to alternatives.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
