In Marion, Maine, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. Need a hair or alcohol test? We're experts in hair assessments with nationwide locations ready to assist. Typically, you’ll require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, either from the scalp or body, for testing. Our analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Hair follicle drug testing is increasingly becoming the method of choice for substance detection, preferred by employers, courts, and addiction professionals over conventional urine tests. These tests are mandated by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probation officers. Advantages of hair tests include extended detection—up to 90 days—and security against tampering, unlike urine tests best suited for detecting recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a long-term tracker of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the strands of developing hair. A sample of hair taken near the scalp can offer a detection timeline of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5 inch segment of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) from the scalp should provide 100mg of hair, ideal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or more than 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair may be utilized. When discussing head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Process

The lab processing of a drug test consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the initial processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was adequately sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive result is necessary for legal proceedings. Any sample that tests presumptively positive during Screening mandates further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Drugs in hair are extracted at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating a presumptuous positive result undergo washing before confirmation as deemed necessary. The laboratory procedures from Accessioning to Confirmation are examined following both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Benefits of Hair Drug Testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a briefer detection span.
  • Hard to circumvent: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: Hair tests trace a pattern of drug use over a lengthy period, not merely recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot determine recent usage: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth might influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
