Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Medford, Maine. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in these services and offer testing locations in every city across the United States. You generally need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or body for the test. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific analysis.

In recent times, drug testing strategies increasingly involve hair follicle tests. This method is being favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over the traditional urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, legal institutions, and probationary services opt for hair testing. Its major advantage is a prolonged detection period, usually up to 90 days, and its resistance to tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain the best option for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective resource for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to alter, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is recommended to measure the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair might be used. When addressing head hair, it specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in a laboratory comprises four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory system. Verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering additional data not included by an electronic chain of custody are part of this step.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to be legally defensible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For samples that are presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs are extracted from hair at much lower levels of concentration in this stage than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening uniquely challenging.

Confirmation of any positive screening result occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards of accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Tracks historical data: It can trace a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than only the recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the assessment actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
