Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Naples, Maine. Specialized in hair drug and alcohol testing, we have testing facilities across all major cities nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. For accurate results, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary on the scalp or body. Tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are essential for organizations with zero-tolerance policies and individuals on probation. Hair tests offer longer detection periods, up to 90 days, and minimize the risk of cheating, although urine tests are more reliable for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains markers of alcohol and other drugs in its strands over time, providing a lengthy detection history. When taken near the scalp, it can reflect up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, it's relatively tamper-proof, and it can be easily transported.

A sample of hair measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, it's advised to have 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal amount of body hair can be taken instead. Referring to head hair means only scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (like facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The sequence of steps in processing drug tests in a lab includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step, which integrates a sample into a lab system. This involves checking that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry needed beyond what's given by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary fast-tracking for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal proceedings. Any presumptively positive samples from Screening need a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive at the Screening level, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening a challenging process.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, which is longer compared to urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is exceedingly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, increasing result accuracy.
  • Reveals historical drug patterns: It showcases a history of drug consumption over an extended time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze hair strands, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Naples, ME is attributable to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. While both testing methods aim to identify substance use, hair testing stands out due to its ability to provide a longer detection window. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
