Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in New Limerick, Maine. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair testing, with facilities in every city Nationwide capable of conducting hair analyses. Usually, hair lengths of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body are sufficient. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method over traditional urine tests for identifying substance use. It's increasingly chosen by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists. Many organizations with strict anti-drug use policies, as well as legal and probation settings, prefer hair follicle tests. They provide an extended detection timeframe, typically covering up to 90 days, through supervised collections, minimizing the risk of tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain preferable for assessing drug use within a five-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a lengthy history of alcohol and other drug use by encapsulating biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When sampled close to the scalp, hair can present up to a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimum amount for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest scaling the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This entails confirming the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid test for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

If a sample is tentatively positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is quite hard to deceive a hair drug test, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself, not the follicle underneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Comparing hair follicle and urine tests in New Limerick, ME highlights the superiority of hair testing. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
