Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug test services in North East Carry, Maine. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol test using hair samples, our expertise in hair testing stands out, with facilities across the nation ready to conduct such tests. Most situations require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Hair analysis can be tailored to examine drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

In the past few years, the use of hair follicle drug testing has gained traction as a common method. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer it over standard urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, the judiciary, and individuals under probation choose hair follicle tests. The main advantage of this testing is the extended timeframe it can detect drug use—up to 90 days, with the process being observed, ensuring it is nearly impossible to fake results. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as a powerful means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand, hair offers a long-term record of alcohol and drug presence. When gathered near the scalp, hair may present up to about a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result incorporates four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial incorporation of a sample into the lab system, ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data input not provided by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening performs an initial rapid test for illicit drugs. While Screening offers a cost-efficient measure to dismiss drug usage for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be upheld in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Presumptively positive samples in Screening lead to additional hair being taken from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a concentration much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), emphasizing the complexity of hair drug screening procedures.

Positive screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection range.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, improving result accuracy.
  • Gathers historical usage: It provides a timeline of drug consumption over time, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation is actually conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
