In Peru, Maine, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analysis for both drug and alcohol tests. For anyone requiring such examinations, we specialize in this method, with facilities in every city across the country ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. These analyses can be tailored to screen for substances, alcohol/ETG, or other specific drugs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for detecting drug use. More organizations, like companies, legal courts, and addiction specialists, now opt for hair drug screens over the conventional urine test. Employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officials find this testing advantageous due to its extended detection window of approximately 90 days, observed collection, and challenging fraud resistance. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying recent drug usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers in the fibers of the strand, offering an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal alcohol and drug use up to a 3-month period. Collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands resembles the thickness of a #2 pencil and yields 100mg, providing the ideal sample for analysis. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. It is advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "Body hair" encompasses all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab's system. This includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening ensures a rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening provides a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires validation to be court-admissible. Any samples showing a preliminary positive in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If Screening shows a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are separated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with preliminary positive results are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to tamper with: It's challenging to alter a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Historical insights: It reveals a drug use pattern over time, unlike tests that only show recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs require 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
