Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Phippsburg, Maine. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing can be accessed at our centers across Nationwide cities. To conduct a hair test, individuals typically need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body area. Such tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer this method over conventional urine tests. Suited for zero-tolerance workplaces and probation requirements, its main advantage is detecting drug use over an extended period, up to 90 days, in a supervised manner that's nearly impossible to alter. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are recognized as a robust means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a lasting record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands' fibers. When procured from near the scalp, hair can offer an estimated detection span of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (about the dimensions of a #2 pencil) from the nearest point to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation tests. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable volume of body hair can be collected. Head hair pertains strictly to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the first step of integrating a sample into a lab's protocol. This step includes ensuring that the sample is sealed and transported correctly, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse takes place. Although Screening is an economical method for dismissing drug usage in most cases, any positive result from Screening requires confirmation to make it valid in court. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If there is a presumptive positive result during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In the Extraction stage, drug compounds are extracted at a lower concentration from hair than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the more challenging methods to perform.

Any positive result from Screening undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to Confirmation as needed. The entire lab workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection duration: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for as long as 90 days, while urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Concocting a hair drug test result is very challenging, enhancing result precision.
  • Historical data provision: It can showcase drug usage patterns over time, unlike recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Influences like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
