In Pittsfield, Maine, Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services. For anyone requiring drug or alcohol testing using hair samples, our centers across all U.S. cities are ready to assist. Ideally, having around 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is necessary. Our testing is capable of identifying drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have become a staple in drug testing methodologies in recent times. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals increasingly prefer this method over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, judicial bodies, and probation mandates benefit from the extended detection period of up to 90 days that hair tests provide, with observation during collection enhancing accuracy. For recent drug use, within a 5-day window, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair fiber. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests with more than 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" pertains to all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

Four primary steps characterize the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This step confirms the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial quick assessment for substances of abuse. Screening is an economical method to exclude drug usage on most samples, but a positive result requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples showing a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

In cases of presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which positions hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to shorter detection windows of urine tests.
  • Hard to tamper: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While these are often called "hair follicle tests," the test actually assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
