Accredited Drug Testing offers all-inclusive hair follicle drug screening in Porter, Maine. Our expertise in hair drug and alcohol testing is matched with a wide network of centers across the nation, including in every city. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Comprehensive hair analyses can be conducted to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or meet specific testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence in recent years as a preferred method for detecting substance use. More employers, legal entities, and specialists in Substance Abuse are favoring these tests over traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation officers opt for hair tests due to their extensive detection window, which spans up to 90 days. These tests, which require supervision during sample collection, are very difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting very recent substance use (within 5 days), urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the threads of the elongating hair strand. When clipped near the scalp, hair offers up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to gather, fairly challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A section of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for assessments and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is absent, a similar portion of body hair can be obtained. By head hair, we only indicate scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the procedure includes the initial sample processing into a lab's system. This step ensures that the sample was sealed and transported accurately, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any required data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although a cost-effective means to exclude drug use in the bulk of samples, a positive screening must be verified to be court-admissible. Samples indicated as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For any presumptively positive sample at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, hair undergoes drug extraction at markedly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is among the most complex methodologies to execute.

Verification of a positive screening outcome is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are preliminarily positive undergo washing before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can sense drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine evaluations which possess a shorter detection span.
  • High resistance to deception: It is exceptionally arduous to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing result precision.
  • Supplies historical insight: It offers a portrayal of drug use trends over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to recognize recent use: An interval of around 5-7 days is needed for drugs to be discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier than other drug examination techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", this examination actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
