Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Solon, Maine. Renowned for our expertise in hair drug and alcohol analysis, our nationwide centers can conduct these tests in any city. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our hair tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized to meet specific requirements.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. It's increasingly mandated by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals as an alternative to urine tests. Those enforcing zero-tolerance policies often choose hair tests due to their extended detection window, observing drug use up to 90 days, and difficulty to tamper with samples. For more recent drug usage detection within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a significant method for identifying substance and alcohol use. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug consumption by entrapping biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. If collected near the scalp, hair can present a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, it's challenging to tamper with, and it is easily transportable.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, comprising about 200 strands (approximately akin to a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, extra tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Usage of a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. In cases where scalp hair cannot be utilized, a similar amount of body hair may be harvested. When the term head hair is utilized, it pertains solely to scalp hair alone. Body hair denotes all other hair categories (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result includes four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, an initial handling of a sample into a laboratory's system takes place. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and supplements any missing data that isn’t covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial, rapid examination for substances of abuse. While a cost-efficient approach for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be considered valid in legal proceedings. Any samples leading to a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

In instances where a sample indicates a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are separated from the hair at markedly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of executing hair drug screening.

Verification of any positive screen result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the whole laboratory procedure is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical consumption data: Offers insights into drug usage patterns over time, rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other testing methods.
  • Outcome discrepancies: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
