In South Eliot, Maine, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug examinations. If a hair-based test for drugs or alcohol is required, our specialty in hair analysis is supported by testing locations in cities nationwide. Typically, hair from the crown or body, at least 1.5 to 2 inches long, is essential. Through hair, drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke tests are detectable.

Recently, hair follicle tests have gained favor in drug screenings. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer these over urine tests. This method benefits entities with zero-tolerance policies for drugs, offering an extended 90-day detection window with difficult-to-tamper samples. However, urine tests remain most precise for recent, five-day-use screenings.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a highly effective method for detecting drug and alcohol intake. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and other substances by embedding trace elements within the strands during growth. When sourced close to the head, hair can reveal around a 90-day usage window for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and can be easily transported.

A 1.5-inch lock of approximately 200 hairs (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the ideal quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it's advised to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to ascertain the weight of the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. In contrast, body hair comprises all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main stages in the lab processing for drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s procedures. This process involves ensuring the sample's seal and shipment integrity, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any necessary data that wasn't inputted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive indication necessitates confirmation to be considered court-admissible. Samples suspected of positive results in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample is expected to be positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial batch and readied for Extraction. This phase extracts substances from hair at a significantly reduced concentration than found in other models (e.g., urine or saliva), contributing to hair drug screening being one of the most complex techniques to execute.

Validation of any positive results from the screening phase is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with assumed positive results are cleaned prior to validation as required. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the complete lab procedure is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug examinations can detect substance use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine examinations, which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to tamper with: It is exceptionally challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers temporal data: It can provide a timeline of substance use over an extended period, instead of just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect immediate consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are typically costlier compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug derivatives in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually inspects the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
