Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Sweden, Maine. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities across the nation ready to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or elsewhere on the body is necessary. These tests are proficient in detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing varieties.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained prevalence in drug screening methodologies in recent years. This form of testing is favored by employers, legal courts, and substance abuse counselors over conventional urine tests. Companies with strict anti-drug policies, judicial bodies, and probation officers count primarily on these tests. The standout advantage is its extended detection reach of up to 90 days, combined with an observed collection protocol, making it nearly foolproof. Nevertheless, urine tests hold superior accuracy for recent drug use, specifically within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair retain biomarkers within their fibers, offering a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug presence. When obtained from the scalp, hair can reveal consumption patterns within a 3-month timeframe for various substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, or assessments beyond 10-panel tests, 150mg of hair is advised. A jeweler's scale is suggested for precise measurement. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first integrated into the lab's system. This involves ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening provides a cost-effective means to dismiss drug use in the majority of cases, a positive result mandates confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples yielding a presumptive positive require a follow-up assessment.

If a presumptive positive is identified in Screening, additional hair is sourced from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug analysis is more challenging.

Confirmation of any positive findings is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, considerably longer than the detection window for urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The probability of manipulating a hair drug test is minimal, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: This method reveals drug usage trends over extended periods, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair is possible around 5-7 days post-drug use.
  • Cost: In comparison with other testing techniques, hair drug tests tend to be pricier.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: Despite being termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
