In Verona Island, Maine, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Specializing in hair-based drug and alcohol tests, we have centers across all cities in the nation to administer this type of test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG or cater to other specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a preferred method for drug assessments. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts now often favor this over urine tests. It suits organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, the justice system, and probation settings. The key advantage is the test's extended detection span of up to 90 days, and it is conducted under direct observation, making evasion almost unfeasible. For recent drug use, less than 5 days, urine remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows, hair offers an extended retrospective view of substance use. When sampled near the scalp, hair can provide information on drug and alcohol presence for up to approximately three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests that exceed 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

In laboratory drug testing, the four primary stages are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a specimen is first processed into the laboratory's workflow. This step ensures the sample has been properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any other data entry not yet completed through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary review for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly strategy to dismiss drug use across most samples, confirmation is required for positive screens to be legally acceptable. Should any sample be presumed positive in Screening, it requires an additional confirmation test.

Upon receiving a presumed positive Screening result, further hair from the originating specimen is gathered and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration considerably lower than that of other approaches (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most complex to execute.

For Confirmation of a positive screening outcome, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is utilized. Before Confirmation, all samples deemed presumptive positive are subjected to washing as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is inspected following both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug utilization for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: The difficulty in falsifying a hair drug test enhances the accuracy of results.
  • Archives historical usage: Offers insight into drug patterns over time, beyond recent exposure.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent drug use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Verona Island, ME, offers clear advantages over conventional urine tests. While both aim to detect substance use, hair testing provides superior detection accuracy and reliability. Where typical urine tests may fall short, hair tests excel with their enhanced sensitivity to various substances, capturing a longer history of use. This broader detection window translates into a reliable method for verifying abstinence from substances.

Unlike urine tests, which might be subject to temporary alterations, hair tests remain unaffected by short-term detox methods. They provide factual insight into long-term substance behaviors, benefiting organizations needing stringent monitoring and comprehensive analysis. Companies find these tests invaluable for meeting zero-tolerance policies and ensuring workplace integrity.

Extended Detection Window

In Verona Island, ME, hair follicle testing is invaluable due to its extended detection window, providing insights up to 90 days back. This advantage lets employers scrutinize an applicant's or employee's substance use comprehensively, unlike urine tests that generally look back only a few days. By evaluating a broader timeline, hair testing paints an accurate, long-term picture of substance use behaviors.

This prolonged detection period aids employers by affording them a far-reaching view of an individual's drug history, thus informing hiring or disciplinary actions. It’s an essential tool for maintaining a drug-free environment and understanding potential risks associated with substance abuse over time, crucial for both safety and policy enforcement in workplaces.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Verona Island, ME, significantly reduces the chance of tampering, ensuring reliable and indisputable results. This method involves analyzing samples that are notably resistant to adulteration, unlike urine samples that can be manipulated. This nature makes hair testing a preferred choice by organizations where the integrity of the results is paramount.

The difficulty of tampering with hair samples assures stakeholders of authentic results reflecting true substance use. Whether for legal, employment, or personal purposes, the robustness of hair testing ensures dependable data, offering peace of mind and certitude in a realm where accuracy is crucial.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
