In West Seboeis, Maine, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle testing services. Whether you're looking for hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair assessments is unparalleled, with locations across the nation ready to assist. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required from the crown or body, allowing for drug and alcohol/ETG detection, as well as other tailored testing possibilities.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method over traditional testing techniques. A variety of stakeholders, including employers, legal authorities, and those addressing Substance Abuse, favor hair tests over urine samples. Employers with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and people on probation benefit greatly from these tests due to their extended drug detection window, typically reaching 90 days, coupled with an observed collection to minimize tampering. Nevertheless, for drug use within the previous five days, urine tests still offer superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a longitudinal record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair may offer up to a roughly 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch specimen comprising about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal sample size for tests and confirmations. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels over 10, it is suggested to use 150mg. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't obtainable, an equivalent body hair volume may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing phase of incorporating a sample into a lab’s system. This encompasses ensuring the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any outstanding data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening provides an early-stage evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although it is an affordable way to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to be court-admissible. All presumptive positives identified in Screening must go through further confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which contributes to making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of positive screenings is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumed positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire laboratory procedure is evaluated following both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of Hair Drug Testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests that have a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to deceive: It's exceedingly challenging to disguise a hair drug test result, enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It showcases drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: A window of 5-7 days is required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth rate can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
