Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Westfield, Maine. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in these tests, and our facilities are available in every city Nationwide. Generally, hair tests require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, which can be taken from the head or body in most situations. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often choose hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation. Their main advantage is an extended detection window for drugs, up to 90 days, conducted under supervised conditions, making them nearly foolproof. However, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a record of drug and alcohol consumption by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it can provide up to a three-month detection period for both alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to obtain, relatively difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample of approximately 1.5 inches in length, comprising about 200 strands of hair (roughly the dimension of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is considered the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG add-ons and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be an option, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The comprehensive laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result comprises four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the foundational processing of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any remaining data entry requirements not addressed by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for the presence of drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug use in the majority of samples, a positive result from screening necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, further amounts of hair are extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, substances are withdrawn from the hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), underscoring the complexity of conducting hair drug testing.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with a presumptive positive result undergo a cleansing process prior to confirmation if required. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use up to 90 days back, compared to urine tests that have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks historical usage: This testing provides insights into a pattern of drug use over time, as opposed to only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent drug intake: A time frame of around 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests incur a greater expense than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites found in hair.

Note: Although frequently referred to as "hair follicle tests", this analysis evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
