In Windham, Maine, Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug tests. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our centers in all nationwide cities, including hair test specialists, are at your service. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is necessary for a hair test, enabling analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have been more commonly adopted for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are favoring hair tests over traditional urine tests. These are essential for zero-tolerance workplaces and legal situations like probation, thanks to their extended detection, spanning up to 90 days, their monitored collection, and resistance to tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain accurate for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by encasing biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can offer an alcohol and drug detection timeframe of up to around 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar to a #2 pencil thickness) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. Head hair refers only to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal steps in processing a drug test in a lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This step incorporates checking that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial quick review for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective tactic to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive outcome needs confirmation for courtroom admissibility. Any samples preliminarily positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are preliminarily positive are cleaned prior to confirmation, if necessary. A comprehensive review of the lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Cheat-proof: Manipulating a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Supplies historical data: It can trace a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Costs: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
