In Yarmouth, Maine, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those needing hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise in hair testing is supported by a network of centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. We can test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation services due to their extended 90-day detection period and difficulty to evade. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting alcohol and drug use. By capturing biomarkers in the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, hair offers a prolonged account of drug and alcohol use. Hair collected near the scalp provides an alcohol and drug detection window of roughly three months. It's easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands of hair (roughly the width of a #2 pencil), closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advised. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is missing, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves incorporating a sample into the lab system, ensuring it was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

During Screening, an initial assessment for drugs of abuse is conducted. Though an economical way to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening demand further confirmation.

For samples indicated as presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), solidifying hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is employed to confirm any positive screening result. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is very challenging, hence the results are more reliable.
  • Reveals historical patterns: It can illustrate a timeline of drug use, not merely recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Detectable traces of drugs in hair appear approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing options.
  • Disparities in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the assessment examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Yarmouth, ME, hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine testing in detecting substance use. While urine tests offer short-term results, hair tests reveal drug history over extended periods, presenting a broader perspective for employers. The enhanced accuracy and reliability of hair testing mark a notable improvement in substance detection.

Hair follicle testing is preferred due to its superior detection features that allow it to identify drug traces even after extended use. It provides clarity on an individual's substance abuse history, unlike urine testing, which focuses on more recent activities, making it ideal for comprehensive assessments.

Extended Detection Window

Employers in Yarmouth, ME, benefit from hair follicle testing's extended detection period of up to 90 days. This testing method provides a detailed view of an individual's substance use history, far exceeding the limited window of urine tests. Employers can make informed decisions based on comprehensive insights into an employee's substance history.

The extensive detection window of hair tests aids in identifying consistent drug use patterns, assisting companies in maintaining drug-free workplaces. A 90-day outlook ensures employees adhere to substance policies, ultimately fostering safer work environments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
