Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities located in every major city across the nation for conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be tested. Hair can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom hair testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more standard approach in drug examinations. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance misuse professionals opt for hair drug testing over usual urine screening. Employers who strictly prohibit drug usage, courts, and those on probation often depend on hair follicle tests. A major advantage is its extended detection window, often up to 90 days, collected under observation, making it tough to tamper with. Still, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate a lasting history of drug and alcohol intake by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair's fibers. If the hair is cut near the scalp, it can reveal a detection period of up to three months for various substances. Hair samples are easy to collect, relatively tough to tamper with, and uncomplicated to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately akin to a #2 pencil in size) near the scalp contains close to 100mg of hair, which serves as the optimal sample size for evaluation. For EtG, optional add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advisable. It is recommended to use a jeweler's scale for measuring the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The key phases in a lab's drug testing process are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the primary stage where a sample is organized within a lab's framework. This step ensures the sample is correctly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry that an electronic custody chain doesn’t provide.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid assessment for commonly abused substances. Although Screening is an economical way to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive result must undergo confirmation for court acceptance. Samples flagged as presumptively positive after Screening require further verification.

If a sample returns a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. At this juncture, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), which lends to the complexity of conducting hair drug analysis.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All positive samples are cleansed prior to proceeding with Confirmation as required. The entire lab operation, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter duration of urine tests.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Manipulating hair drug tests is challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronological data: It can chart a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs become discernible in hair after around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments tend to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing drug testing methods in Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD, hair follicle testing prevails over traditional urine tests. Hair tests offer superior detection accuracy and have a significant edge in reliability.

Due to their robust detection window and accuracy, hair follicle tests are favored over urine tests, providing a more trustworthy account of substance use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
