Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Arbutus, Maryland. Should you require a test for drugs or alcohol using hair, Accredited Drug Testing is specialized in this area with testing centers available across various cities nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are necessary, usually taken from the crown of the head or body. Hair tests are versatile as they can detect substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Employers, legal institutions, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer hair tests over the traditional urine analysis. This method is favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal systems, and those monitoring individuals on probation. Hair tests offer advantages such as a prolonged detection window of approximately 90 days as well as being conducted under direct supervision, which minimizes the chances of tampering. Despite this, for detecting drug use in the recent five-day period, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Utilizing hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair records a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can provide an approximate 3-month detection timeframe for substances and alcohol. Collection of hair is straightforward, moderately challenging to tamper, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional parameters, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is suggested. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for accurate weighing. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair can be substituted. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial hair, axillary hair, etc.).

Process Summary

The processing of a drug test result in a lab involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary handling of a sample within the laboratory setup. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening carries out an initial swift assessment for drugs of misuse. It provides a cost-efficient means to disprove substance misuse across most samples; however, a positive screening result necessitates confirmation to be considered valid legally. Any samples that demonstrate a presumptive positive during Screening require a confirmatory follow-up.

When a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drug substances are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration than with alternate techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most complex methodology.

A confirmation for a positive screening outcome is completed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory evaluation from Accessioning to Confirmation complies with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and adheres to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug analysis:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for periods as long as 90 days, which contrasts with urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating with hair drug tests is extremely difficult, offering more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical usage insight: Hair analysis offers a chronicle of drug use over an extended period instead of merely recent activity.

Constraints:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: Substances typically become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug analysis usually incurs higher costs compared to other testing forms.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
