Providing comprehensive analyses, Accredited Drug Testing offers precise hair follicle drug testing services in Arundel Village, Maryland. Expertly catering to hair drug or alcohol examination needs, our centers, located across cities Nationwide, are equipped to manage your testing requirements. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body suffices for analysis. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer customizable hair analysis solutions.

Over recent years, the preference for drug testing methods has leaned towards hair follicle testing. This approach is increasingly favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals benefit from hair follicle testing. Its chief advantage is a broader detection timeframe, stretching up to 90 days, collected securely under observation, and posing significant resistance to tampering. However, for drug use detection within five days, urine tests maintain superior accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has emerged as an effective means for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the advancing hair strand. When gathered close to the scalp, it can supply roughly a 3-month detection duration for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, quite resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or evaluations above 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be obtained. By head hair, we denote only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental steps involved in the lab handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step includes verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addressing any additional data entry that isn’t supplemented by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to negate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for judicial admissibility. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive at the Screening stage, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than through other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is implemented via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Provides historical insights: It showcases a drug use pattern over time, beyond merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variances can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself scrutinizes the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Arundel Village, MD, offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. One main benefit is its superior detection accuracy, identifying substances with greater precision. Unlike urine tests, hair tests provide an extensive timeline of drug use, detecting it up to 90 days prior.

This amplified detection window ensures a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's history. Moreover, the reliability of hair testing, less prone to manipulation compared to urine tests, enhances the confidence and trust of employers and other stakeholders seeking accurate results.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle testing method in Arundel Village, MD, is praised for its extensive detection period, spanning up to 90 days. This characteristic provides employers with a broad insight into an individual's drug use history, offering a more comprehensive perspective than shorter-term tests.

Employers benefit from this extended detection window, enabling them to make informed decisions about potential or current employees. The 90-day window surpasses the capabilities of other testing methods, contributing to its preference in policies requiring thorough drug history assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
