Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Bay Ridge, Maryland. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area and offers testing locations in all cities across the country. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized testing services.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test has been increasingly utilized for drug screening. A growing number of employers, legal systems, and substance abuse clinicians now opt for hair tests over the traditional urine exams. Hair follicle screenings are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal authorities, and probationers. This method offers an extended window of detection, typically up to 90 days, is reliably collected under observation, and is highly resistant to tampering. Yet, for detecting usage within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-lasting record of alcohol and other drugs by integrating biomarkers within the fibers of the progressing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section, consisting of about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp, provides 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or over 10 panel tests, collecting 150mg of the specimen is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair might be gathered. When specifying head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four critical steps in the laboratory handling of a drug test outcome involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory's framework. This stage includes confirming the sample has been sealed and transported correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any data entry not accommodated by an electronic chain of custody protocol.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Despite Screening being a budget-friendly approach to identifying drug usage in most samples, a conclusive screen must be validated to be accepted in legal contexts. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample is preliminarily positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and set for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most intricate method to execute.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to fabricate results: The difficulty in tampering with a hair drug test enhances result precision.
  • Delivers historical patterns: It can demonstrate a trend of drug consumption over time, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing options.
  • Discrepancies in results: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand and does not assess the hair follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bay Ridge, MD., the benefits of hair follicle testing vastly outrank traditional urine tests. One key feature is its superior detection capability, providing more accurate and dependable results. Unlike urine tests, which can be easily manipulated, hair tests offer unparalleled resistance to cheating, making them the clear choice for a reliable testing method.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
