Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Birdsville, Maryland. Whether you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise at Accredited Drug Testing ensures dependable hair testing services. With our extensive network of testing centers across cities nationwide, we can conduct the hair test you need. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or various body areas can be used to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair test requirements.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent. Many organizations, courts, and substance abuse specialists are now opting for hair tests over conventional urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, the legal system, and probation officers frequently choose hair follicle drug tests. The main advantage of this method is its extended 90-day drug detection window, with samples collected under supervision and virtually tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent substance use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When acquired near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of up to around 3 months for substances. Gathering hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in diameter to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't an option, a comparable quantity of body hair might be used. By head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in lab-based processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s framework. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocates a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfills any extra data requirements not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most cases, a positive screening must be confirmed to stand in legal proceedings. Samples with presumptive positives at the Screening phase need secondary verification.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, substances are extracted from hair at a notably reduced concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is considered highly challenging to perform.

Confirmation for any positive screen outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation in line with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test poses significant challenges, contributing to more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: It can illustrate a trend of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes an estimated 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests are more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why does hair follicle testing outshine urine tests in Birdsville, MD? The evident advantage lies in its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests reveal a comprehensive history of substance use over time, unlike traditional urine tests, which are limited to recent use.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
