Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug examinations in Bladensburg, Maryland. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing is your specialist, with centers spread across all cities in the nation. A typical requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in drug screening processes. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists often mandate hair tests over the standard urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and those in probation. The main advantage is their extended drug detection window, up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process making them nearly foolproof. Urine tests, however, remain more precise for detecting recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as a highly effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for various substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug testing result encompasses four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary processing of a specimen into the laboratory's system. This stage involves ensuring the specimen was correctly sealed and transported, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data that the electronic chain of custody system does not provide.

Screening consists of an initial, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to dismiss drug usage in most specimens, any positive diagnosis requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any specimens that show presumptive positives in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a specimen registers presumptive positives in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair in significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most intricate methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening results is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. Every facet of the laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests have the capability of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a more limited detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is exceedingly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It can outline a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection in hair takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Differences in hair color and individual growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests," the assessment itself examines the hair strand instead of the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
