Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Bloomington, Maryland. If you require a hair-based test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing ensures that we have facilities nationwide, including all major cities, to carry out such assessments. Typically, you will need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available, either from the head or body, which can be used for analysis. Drug, alcohol/ETG, or other customized hair testing options are available.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become an increasingly common method for substance detection. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer it to the traditional urine tests. Hair tests are ideal for employers enforcing strict no-drug-use policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation. A hair follicle test is advantageous due to its lengthy detection period, typically up to 90 days, with samples collected under supervision, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the more precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now widely regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol intake. Hair strands retain long-term data on alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. If taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to nearly 3 months for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A strand measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil's thickness) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount needed for both initial and confirmatory assessments. For tests including EtG, additional panels, or over 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is suggested. Should scalp hair not be accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. It's important to note that head hair specifically implies scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The complete process of laboratory drug testing encompasses Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the preliminary handling of a sample within the laboratory's framework. This step includes confirming secure sealing and correct shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and supplementing any missing data not covered through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening includes an initial procedure to quickly detect drug abuse. Though it's an economical way to eliminate drug use for many samples, a confirmation is necessary for a positive result to be court-acceptable. Any samples that appear positive during Screening require a validating secondary test.

During the Screening phase, if a sample appears positive, additional hair from the specimen is prepared for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing a more complex method to conduct.

Confirming a positive result is carried out with GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation when necessary. The lab process from start to finish, Accessioning through Confirmation, is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine testing with a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to falsify: Manipulating a hair drug test is very challenging, thus the results are more dependable.
  • Reveals historical usage: Hair testing provides a record of drug consumption over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Can't detect recent usage: Drugs take around 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other methods.
  • Results can vary: Hair color and individual differences in growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually focuses on the hair strands above the scalp rather than the follicles.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
